Writing a Successful Resume and Cover Letter
Looking for a new job? Then it’s time to get your resume in order. But how do you write a successful resume? How do you write one that will stand out and get noticed? How do you organize it? What information do you include? And how do you write a great cover letter? This blog helps you find those answers. Looking for a new job is difficult enough; you need a strong, well written resume and cover letter to help get you that job interview. No matter what the economic situation is, there are always people looking for a job and there is always going to be competition. And while writing a great resume and cover letter are so important, there is a lot more to getting a job than just those two things. Writing a Resume: What Topics to Include
Author: Kit McBride
Objective In 2 or 3 sentences let the employer know what specific type of work you are interested in.
Qualifications Give a short paragraph that summarizes your experience and skills. You can list specific details about your qualifications. Depending on what kind of job you are applying for and what experience you have, this topic can be included in your work experience instead or discussed in your cover letter.
Work Experience Give a one paragraph summery of each of your previous jobs. Include the name of the business you worked for, starting and ending dates, job title and duties and any special accomplishments.
Education Give a summary of schools attended. Include the name, city and state the school is located in, years attended, degree earned and any seminars or special courses that you attended
Honors and Awards List any special awards or achievements
Personal List activities you’re involved in and hobbies you enjoy
Other Accomplishments or Special Skills Organizations you belong to, articles you’ve published and any special skills you are familiar with like computer programs or equipment you have experience operating.
References List at least 3 references or you can put “references available upon request”
While it’s important to include all the basic information on your resume, not all of the above topics are appropriate or applicable to all people. Choose the topics that are right for you and your level of experience. What is important is that you list, organize and explain all of your qualifications in the best possible way.
Preparing for a Job Interview

It is very important to prepare in advance for your job interview. Give some thought to the types of questions that the interviewer might ask and practice your answers at home before the interview. You would be surprised at how helpful this can be and how incredibly important too. You want to state your answers in just the right way so that they are positive, honest, informative and concise. You don’t want to ramble on and get side tracked; you need to stick to the point. Here are a few questions that many interviewers ask that you can start your practice with. They are:
- Tell me about yourself. Give a brief summary of your job skills and experience. This will explain why you are qualified for the job. Think of what kind of information they want and need to know about you.
- Why do you want to work here? This one is always a tough one for me but it’s a question that almost everyone asks and it’s REALLY important that you have a good answer. There are all kinds of possible reasons for wanting to work somewhere, just make sure your answer is honest and don’t make something up just because you think that’s what the interviewer wants to hear. Ask yourself “why do I want to work here? What is it about this company that makes me think it would be a good place to work?”
- Do you have any questions? This is often asked toward the end of the interview and you should ALWAYS have a question or two to ask the interviewer. This is definitely something that you can prepare for in advance; just make sure you don’t ask about money or benefits at this point. The question should have to do with the job, its duties and qualifications or the company itself. You might ask the interviewer what they like about working for this company or how they started. After all, we all like to be asked about ourselves, don’t we?
This preparation can also help you to be more relaxed and comfortable during your interview. If you really want to find out how you sound and how your answers sound, find a tape recorder and tape a “practice interview”, even if you do it by yourself. This can be a great learning experience because you get the opportunity to hear yourself the way others might hear you. You may not be aware of how your answers sound until you hear them played back on a tape recorder; you may be too chatty, too loud or soft, too negative, maybe you laugh too much, you may sound too formal, too stiff or too shy. It’s absolutely crucial that you do well during your job interview so you need to be as prepared as possible.
When you meet the person that will interview you, the first few minutes are very important to starting out on the right foot. A lot of the success of an interview depends on the rapport that is established between you and the interviewer. So when you first meet, don’t appear nervous, intimidated or shy. Be confident, friendly and professional. Smile and maintain eye contact (but don’t stare). You should also have a good handshake. This is important because it can give a good first impression or a bad one. You don’t want it to be too firm or enthusiastic, that can go against you. But you definitely don’t want it to be light and wimpy either.
Now for some things that you don’t want to do
- Don’t chew gum or candy
- Don’t yawn
- Don’t fidget
- Don’t keep looking at your watch
- Don’t talk too much (like I said up above, don’t ramble. Stick to the point. Be concise)
- Don’t fake it. Be yourself. Put your best foot forward but be who you are and not what you think they want to see.
The bottom line is; Interviewers want to know the things about you that are not on your resume. They want to know what kind of person you are, how you will fit in with the other employees, how capable you are of doing this job, how you handle yourself in certain situations, and how dependable you are. By thinking these things through in advance and working out some of your answers, you can be better prepared to show them why you are the best candidate for the job.

Hello, You wanted to know if i had any suggestions or pointers for you about setting up a blog. Yes I do. First of all, this is my first blog. Before this, I had never even been on a blog and didn’t really know a lot about them. My advice is to do lots of research and to plan everything out first. What subject is your blog going to be on, will you write your own articles or will you get them off the internet, what do you want it to look like and what about hosting, a domain name, marketing and advertising?? There is lots of information out there on the internet so take advantage of it. I have 3 other blogs now, but I’m still learning something new about all of this almost every day.
